Should I Take Private Pilates Sessions Before Joining Group Classes?
If you are thinking about starting Pilates, this is one of the most common questions we hear at Balance- “Do I need to take private Pilates sessions first… or can I jump right into group classes?” The short answer? It depends on your experience - and how confident you want to feel walking into your first class. Let’s walk through it.
If You’re Brand New to Reformer Pilates
If you are brand new to Pilates and you have never done Pilates before on a reformer (or it’s been a long time), starting with a couple of private sessions can make a big difference in your experience in that first group class.
The Pilates reformer is an amazing piece of equipment, but there is a learning curve. Springs, straps, footbars, carriage settings…it can feel like a lot when everything is brand new!
In a private Pilates session, you will
Learn how to set up the reformer for your body
Get familiar with the equipment without feeling rushed
Learn the best spring settings for you
Practice foundational exercises at your own pace
Ask questions freely
and the most important thing of all - build confidence before stepping into a group setting!
What If I Have Taken Pilates Before?
If you have prior experience - especially on the reformer - you may be able to start with group classes. That said, we often still recommend at least one or two private sessions if:
It’s been a while since you have practiced
You are used to a different Pilates studio or teaching style
You want a refresher on form and equipment setup
Even experienced clients are often surprised by how helpful a quick reset in a private session can be for them.
Every studio does things a little differently, so having that one-on-one time also gives you a chance to get comfortable with our equipment and teaching style at Balance before joining a group Pilates class.
Why Private Pilates Sessions Can Make Group Classes Better
Pilates isn’t just about getting through a workout. It’s about moving with control, understanding how your body works, and building strength in a way that actually supports your daily life. Starting with private sessions helps you feel those things sooner so you can progress quicker in a group setting.
Can I Skip Privates and Go Straight Into a Pilates Group Class?
Well, technically, you can. But honestly not many people do at our studio because our client new client special makes starting with one-on-one instruction an accessible way to begin. Investing in your wellness is so important so let’s start out the best way possible with that one on one support!
And here’s what we’ve seen over time - clients who start with even just a couple of private sessions tend to feel more confident right away, get more out of each class, progress faster, and stick with it longer.
